Forest vs liverpool this season

No one put much stock in Liverpool at the start of the season. The Jurgen Klopp era ended in the summer, with the German leaving Liverpool after nine years in charge. He bowed out with Liverpool finishing third in the Premier League and winning the EFL Cup. Arne Slot was the man brought in to replace Klopp, and no one really knew what to truly expect. The gap between Liverpool and the top two wasn't big last season, but with a new manager, it was hard to call. The Reds have taken 53 points from their opening 22 games of the season, losing just once and scoring 54 goals — at least seven more than any other team. Slot's side are six points clear of Arsenal and have a game in hand over their rivals. Their position is formidable.

Next in the race are Nottingham Forest. Yes, you read that correctly. Nottingham Forest are in the title race. The Tricky Trees took the lead after just eight minutes against Liverpool recently and at that very moment, were just three points behind the league leaders. Unfortunately, Diogo Jota pulled Liverpool level to earn a 1-1 draw, but since then an eight-game unbeaten run came to and end at Bournemouth, who ran out 5-0 winners. However, with just five defeats and 27 goals conceded in 23 games, you still cannot rule Forest out. At the very least, Nuno Espirito Santo looks to be leading them back into Europe for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Best players this season

There are some elite goalkeepers in the Premier League right now, including the likes of Alisson, David Raya and Jordan Pickford. However, it's Matz Sels who is top of the pile right now at 68% on the Squawka Score. Considering the Belgian is top for clean sheets (9) and fourth for saves (63) this season, that's hardly a surprise. It's not just Sels keeping Forest air-tight in this surprise title challenge, though, with ex-Liverpool full-back Neco Williams coming in at 71%. He's joined in this title-chasing backline by Trent Alexander-Arnold (77%) on the other flank, with Virgil van Dijk (76%) and Gabriel (73%) in the middle — the latter just edging out another Forest star in Nikola Milenkovic by a fraction of a percentage.

Nobody will be surprised to see Ryan Gravenberch (70%) running this midfield, sneaking in 3% ahead of his Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister. Equally, Arsenal maestro Martin Odegaard (67%) is the creative genius, complimented by the dynamism of Elliot Anderson (68%). Mohamed Salah has the highest Squawka Score of any player in this time at a ridiculous 84%, fuelled by league-highs for goals (18) and assists (13). He's joined in the forward line by Bukayo Saka (82%), who is the only other player to reach double-figure assists alongside scoring five goals of his own, and Chris Wood (70%), who extended his tally to 13 goals in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool — only four players in the league have more.

Premier League

It is 76 days since Liverpool moved back to the top of the 2024-25 Premier League table with a 2-1 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion — a position they haven't relinquished since. Arne Slot's side are not always showing imperious form but have still only been beaten once in their 20 league matches so far and have a four-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal, with a game in hand, going into the weekend's fixtures. So, are Liverpool destined to win just their second domestic championship in 35 years? And, if they are, at what point in the coming months will that triumph become all but nailed-on? We convened an expert panel — some with affiliations to the Anfield side, others to Liverpool's biggest rivals — and sought their views. Pep Guardiola has fried all of our brains. He's shattered a lot of English football's illusions about its exceptionalism during his nine years as Manchester City manager. He's affected the way pretty much every team in the country play. He's changed what we all expect our full-backs to do. And our central defenders. More immediately, he's altered what we all think a title race looks like.
